In the earliest years after his marriage Stephen worked as a labourer
but gradually he prospered and had some land of his own and from 1834
describes himself as a farmer. In 1851 this amounted to 7 u acres. Some time
between 1851-8 he moved to Little Rissington, a village five miles away just
over the border in Gloucestershire and became a mealman. Unfortunately he
didn't live long to enjoy the life there as on 16th March 1860 he died. He was
buried back at Fifield church by the side of his parents and his gravestone
was still standing in 2000, over 140 years later.
