Robert Percival - Family History Notes
From trade directories for the Crown Inn, Hockerill, Bishops Stortford:
1839: Inns: Crown (commercial & posting) Robt. PERCIVAL, Hockerill.
In the 1841 Census his occupation was given as Victualler, Crown Hotel, Hockerill
When his son was born in 1845 Percy's Birth Certificate gave no occupation for Robert.
When his wife Mary died in 1851, her death certificate gave his occupation as
Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
His death certificate indicates occupation as Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages
In 1839 the Crown Inn appears to have been the most important coaching inn in Bishops Stortford.
Coaches stopping at the Crown every day to change horses and refresh the passengers included
the "Royal Mail" and "Magnet", running between London & Norwich; the "Times" and the "Fly" running
between London & Cambridge; and the "Hero" between London and Fakenham and Swaffham.
By 1850 the railway had arrived and the long distance coaching trade had been killed stone dead. (I
don't know the details for Bishop's Stortford but in St Albans it is said that when the London to
Birmingham Railway was built, just one coaching inn in St Albans laid off 200 horses.) Many
coaching inns were in serious financial difficulties, but some continued to provide local horse omnibus
and hackney cab (fly) services. It would appear from the trade directory that the Crown at Hockerill
closed down in the mid 1860's.
...Speculation...and thoughts
In the family bible from Potha there are the following names and dates.
Elizabeth Tunstall b1712 d1797 age 85
Roger Bolton b1724 d1816 age 96
Had the Crown in for 52 years
John Bolton b1727 d1794 age 67
Richard Percival b1750 d1823 age 73
Catherine Percival b1758 d1817 age 59
Elizabeth Wilkes b1762 d1830 age 68
Joseph Bolton b1768 d1803 age 35
Ellen Sewin b1804 d1824 age 20
Roger and John Bolton were almost certainly brothers, based on their birth dates. Elizabeth Tunstall may have been an elder sister, or possibly Roger Bolton's Wife.
In Margaret Kummerfledt's Family Bible there are the following mentions.
Ibbotsons probably of the period 1630 - 1685
Richard Bolton 1685
Richard Bolton 1730
Thomas Bolton 1730
John Bolton 1743,1745,1746
Richard Bolton 1780
Bob Blayney found a will for Joseph Roger Bolton, who had the Crown Inn, which mentioned my nephew Richard Percival and children Anne, John and Thomas.
Found in the British Vital Index CD
Joseph and Elisabeth had the following children.
Ann B 07-07-1799 Bap 06-08-1799 St Michaels, Bishop sStortford
John B 03-07-1800 Bap 05-08-1800 St Michaels, Bishops Stortford
Thomas B 13-01-1802 St Michaels, Bishops Stortford
Joseph B 07-04-1803 Bap 19-04-1803 St Michaels, Bishops Stortford
(Joseph may have died Early as he is not mentioned in the will alternatively his father only lived for
3 months after his birth, so he may not yet have been included).
Roger Bolton and Elizabeth had the following children
Thomas B 15-08-1777 Bap 21-08-1777 St Michaels, Bishops Stortford
Looking at the names of Robert and Mary's children and guessing, their first daughter was called Catherine (Robert's mother's name), their second daughter was called Elizabeth (Catherine's mother's name ?), their first son was called Richard (Robert's fathers name). Henry may have been Mary's father's name, Roger the 4th son may have been named after Roberts grandfather, Catherine's father.
Charles Percival 1800-1840, may have been Richard's Brother. Charles was born in Bishop Stortford and according to a newpaper cutting (not now tracable), was an old resident of the Palmer.
